Three Ways to Improve Elderly Mobility
As you get older, you may find that you’re not as mobile or flexible as you used to be. You might also worry about loved ones and their mobility, especially if they live alone. Aging is simply a part of life, but it can be frustrating or worrying to notice a sudden change in your mobility levels.
Mobility is important as it allows us to live independently, socialise and perform day to day tasks, as well as reduce the risk of accidents or injury. If you or a loved one is experiencing mobility issues, see below for three ways to help improve elderly mobility.
Gentle exercise
Regular, gentle exercise is one of the best ways to improve and retain mobility as we get older. If you’re not sure where to start, a physiotherapist will be able to recommend some exercises that are best suited to your level of mobility.
Stretching, gentle walks, yoga or pilates are all good exercises to try. Swimming is also excellent for improving mobility, as the water supports the muscles and joints.
Regular stretching
As well as improving mobility, gentle stretches also increase blood flow and reduce stress. If you’re worried about balance, many stretches can be comfortably performed sitting down, or by holding onto a chair. Aim to do a few minutes of light stretching every day, such as ankle circles, neck stretching and gentle back stretching.
Home adaptations
Home adaptations can really help if you’re struggling with your mobility and they make everyday tasks like bathing or going upstairs much easier. If you’re unsure what might help, you can book a home assessment to see which adaptations would be most suitable.
Common home adaptations include grab rails, installing a stairlift, widening doorways, adding a walk-in shower or bath and fitting indoor or outdoor ramps.
If you or a loved one is struggling with mobility in their home, consider a stairlift from the experts at Alfix. We’re proud to supply and install a range of curved or straight stairlifts to allow you to move about your home comfortably and safely. We offer free consultations for all potential customers to help you decide which stairlift is right for you, so give us a call today or contact us online to find out more.
