Tips For Using Your Stairlift Safely
Modern, high-quality stairlifts are generally extremely safe and reliable. However, if used incorrectly, they can cause serious harm to both yourself and your stairlift. If you own a stairlift, it is essential that you familiarise yourself with your system’s basic safety features and read the user manual thoroughly. Alongside this, we’ve put together some top tips on how to best stay safe whilst using your stairlift.
Buckle Up
Even though the ride up and down the stairs on your stairlift is a smooth one, it is nonetheless vital that you wear a seatbelt at all times whilst the stairlift is in operation to avoid falling. After all, that’s what it’s there for!
Don’t Treat It As a Toy
Much like all pieces of equipment, children should never be allowed to play with or operate the equipment in any way. Not only might they damage it, but they could also inadvertently injure themselves in the process.
Fold Down the Seat
Most stairlifts are designed with foldable seats to make sure that they aren’t in the way of other stair users, or even won’t present any hazards to them, when the stairlift is not in use. Always be sure to fold the seat away when you have finished operating it.
Obstruction Sensors
Many modern stairlifts will also be fitted with obstruction/safety sensors that automatically stop the stairlift if they detect anything in its path. Make sure that your stairlift and the stairs themselves are clear of items that could trigger the sensors and cause it to stop abruptly. In the case of pets, who could naturally cause an obstruction, try training them to stay clear of the stairs whilst the stairlift is in operation.
Beware of Hanging Items
Loose, hanging items such as scarves, long clothing, towels and blankets have the potential to become stuck in the stairlift’s mechanism. This could cause serious injury and costly damages to the stairlift. Ensure that all loose fabrics are tucked away whilst you are using your stairlift.
Only One at a Time
Stairlifts are designed to only carry one person at a time, and you should never attempt to carry anyone else, including children. Similarly, do not exceed the maximum weight limit that is detailed in your user manual, and do not use it to transport heavy items (such as large storage boxes or furniture) up the stairs.
Regular Maintenance
When serviced routinely, your stairlift is guaranteed to provide years of reliable accessibility. Contact your stairlift supplier and find out if they offer maintenance services, as this will ensure that your stairlift remains safe to use and will reduce the risk of a breakdown.
