Revelling in Retirement: Activities for Old People in Oxford

Just because you’ve finally retired doesn’t mean you should stop getting out and doing things. Whilst it’s nice to slow things down a bit, now is the ideal time to live your life to the fullest and enjoy the things you can do without the 9-5 schedule of a work day holding you back.

There are all kinds of activities out there that are elderly friendly and enjoyable, with Oxford alone offering you plenty of these at your fingertips. Read on below as we suggest three of our favourite activities for the elderly in Oxford.

Memory Lane – The Museum of Oxford

Held at the Museum of Oxford, Memory Lane is a programme of themed reminiscence sessions for older people surrounding Oxford’s rich history.

These sessions are free and run once a month from 2:00-3:30pm. They involve a short informal presentation on a topic, after which there is time to share your own stories, experiences and memories regarding the topic – all whilst enjoying a warm cuppa afterwards!

Participants are encouraged to bring in any relevant photos or items that are appropriate to the theme for the discussion part of this session, if they would like to.

Afternoon Tea at the Randolph Hotel

Located in the centre of the city, the Randolph Hotel is renowned for being one of the most famous hotels in Oxford, housing many well-known names for a visit (such as King Edward VII), featuring in film and televisions (such as Inspector Morse) and being a stunning piece of historical architecture.

If you’re looking for a little bit of luxury, then we highly recommend you indulge in the three-tiered experience of enjoying afternoon tea at the Randolph – served in their wonderfully extravagant Drawing Room.

Tea Books Book Club

If you’re looking for a gentle, sociable activity to partake in and are an avid reader, then joining a TeaBooks Book Club may be the perfect activity for you.

With nine different groups located throughout the county, TeaBooks organises sociable book groups for the over-60s, helping older people to share a love of books and reading, all while making new friends and having lively, interesting discussions.

The books are chosen by the group leader and borrowed from the Oxfordshire library service (including large print and audio books), so that everyone can read the same title ready to discuss at the next meeting, without having to cover the large expenses obtaining books would otherwise entail – instead, you simply need to pay £1 per meeting!
