Embracing Galentine’s Day with Your WI Group: Celebrating Senior Friendship
Celebrated each year on February 13th, Galentine’s Day has become increasingly popular over the years, being observed by women across the world. An aptly named twist on the holiday that takes place the next day, Galentine’s Day celebrates female friendship.
Whilst younger women are very much in on the trend of Galentine’s, we don’t see any reason why women of a mature age shouldn’t be, too! Read on as we discuss some Galentine’s-themed activities you can partake in at your February WI meeting to celebrate your senior (and cross-generational) friendships.
Themed Crafts
Learning new skills, activities and crafts are common occurrences at WI meetings. As such, partaking in crafts surrounding a Galentine’s theme is an idea that would be sure to go down a treat. Members could offer to teach others a skill they are proficient in, or you could find a professional guest to come in and teach everyone something new.
For example, you could make Galentine’s cards, try your hand at flower arranging (giving your bouquet to one of the special gals in your life) or even have a go at making some heart-shaped jewellery.
Film and Food
There’s nothing like a film and food gathering to keep spirits high. Why not find a romance or romantic comedy film to put on for members to enjoy? Perhaps a firm favourite, such as Dirty Dancing or Pretty Woman, or a more recent film that your members may not have seen yet.
Members could each bring some home-baked goods or provide other snacks (wine and cheese, anyone?) to be laid out at a grazing table for everyone to pick at. Afterall, you can’t watch a film without some tasty goodies to go with it!
Even better, these drinks and snacks can also be Galentine’s themed; think love heart sweets, heart shaped cookies, red velvet cake, strawberries, pink lemonade – you get the idea.
Bingo Night
Everybody loves a game of bingo. A bit of friendly competition is always good for the soul, especially when there’s an opportunity to win prizes.
There are many Galentine’s bingo printouts online that you could use – these don’t have to be like traditional bingo, either; you could have a short description that relates to each member of your WI group, with members’ names being the answer, adding an extra element to the game. (Don’t forget to crack out the pink and red bingo daubers)!
There could then be themed prizes for those who win, ranging from a bottle of wine to a spa treatment.
Another potential prize that we, personally, think would go down a treat… a home stairlift, of course! Okay, we understand that this is a bit of an ambitious and tailored prize to offer a bingo winner, but that doesn’t mean you can’t treat yourself to one this Galentine’s day.
Whether you require a straight or curved stairlift, get in touch with us here at Alfix. We offer stairlifts in and around Cheltenham.
