Exploring Volunteering Opportunities During Your Retirement

When you enter retirement, it can feel like there’s something missing in your life. Whilst many individuals find retirement easy to navigate and enjoy getting to make the most of their free time, others may feel like they have more time than they know what to do with and find themselves lacking a sense of direction or purpose.

Volunteering is a great way to fill this gap. Read on to learn more about the benefits it offers and some examples of volunteering opportunities you could explore during retirement.

Why Volunteer Later in Life?

Volunteering offers senior individuals multiple benefits. Firstly, it’s a great way to socialise with others; many elderly individuals can feel very lonely once they reach retirement, so volunteering is a great way to experience regular social interaction and meet new people.

It’s also a great way to feel a sense of purpose. Volunteering can be incredibly rewarding, making you feel like you’re doing something that makes a positive difference to your local community.

Volunteering Opportunities

Libraries

Many towns will have a local library that may offer volunteer opportunities. For retired individuals who are interested in literature, reading and general learning, then libraries make for a great place to volunteer.

They’re great for meeting like minded individuals of all ages and backgrounds and the work involved can be great for expanding various skills in your senior years, such as organisational skills, computer skills and communication skills.

Village Shops

If you live in a village, then your local volunteer opportunities may be more limited. There is likely a village shop, however, that you could volunteer in – in fact, many operate on a volunteer basis.

This offers an opportunity for you to interact with and support your local community, whilst encouraging your confidence and independence.

Community Gardens

If you’re a green thumb, then volunteering in your community gardens could be the perfect solution for you. Not only does it offer you the chance to do something you enjoy, but you can meet other individuals with the same hobby all while making a positive impact on the community.

Not only that, but getting outdoors and interacting with nature, such as through gardening, is proven to be beneficial to both your mental and physical health.

Telephone Friendship Service

If you’re someone who struggles with your mobility in your senior years, then your volunteering options may be more limited. There are still some solutions that could work, however – one of which is the Age UK Telephone Friendship Service.

Whilst the service aims to put volunteers in touch with elderly people, that’s not to say you can’t be one of these volunteers and speak with other seniors who may be in a similar position to and have lots in common with you.

This is something you can do from the comfort of your own home, but allows you to have regular communication with someone each week. Not only can you benefit their life, but this may also benefit yours.
