How to Get Active and Keep Your Body Moving

How to Get Active and Keep Your Body Moving

As we get older, we may use our bodies less or take part in fewer sports and recreational activities. However, as you age, it’s even more important to ensure you keep your body moving and stay active. After all, our bodies are meant to move and we feel our best when we stay active. If you want to maintain your independence and keep your body fit and strong, here’s how you can do it.

Walk more

Many people underestimate the value of just walking. In the modern world, we are so dependent on our cars or public transportation that we tend to forget we can actually walk to a lot of places. Whether you are popping out to the shop or visiting a friend, think about whether the distance is walkable and if so, make the most of the journey and enjoy a little time to yourself. It’s also a great idea to plan out a route you can do every day that isn’t too far. Even a 5 or 10-minute walk will do you great and you can continue to make it longer when you start to feel stronger.

Find a class

It’s never too late to pick up a new activity. From the age of 55, we begin to lose 1% of muscle mass every year, so it’s important to keep doing activities that can maintain our strength. There’s a class for everything these days and if you fancy taking part in water aerobics, tai chi or even yoga, give your local gym a call. They’ll be able to suggest an exercise class for a range of mobility levels and you can find the perfect one for you. The great thing about an exercise class is that it’s a great way to meet new people and make friends.

What if I have pain or an injury?

It’s important not to over-exert yourself if you have a pre-existing condition or injury, however, you shouldn’t let this stop you from enjoying exercise. Speak to your doctor and see what they suggest about the type of exercise you would benefit from. You can modify most exercises to suit your needs, so unless your doctor says so, there’s nothing you can’t try.
