Top 5 Chair-Based Activities for Maintaining Strength

As we get older and our mobility and energy levels decline, we often end up living a more sedentary lifestyle. However, maintaining your physical strength is imperative for enabling you to move around independently and helping to prevent falls.

In this blog post, we will cover some great chair-based exercises for keeping your muscles strong. If you haven’t been doing much exercise for a while, we recommend doing the following set of exercises for a total of 5 to 10 minutes once per day. The length and frequency can be increased as you become stronger.

1.   Toe and Heel Lifts

Start from a seated position with your feet planted on the floor, hip-width apart. Lift your toes off the floor, keeping your heels firmly planted, then lower your toes back down. Next, reverse the movement: lift your heels while keeping your toes on the floor, then lower your heels back down. Repeat these two actions for effective calf stretching and strengthening.

2.   Leg Extensions

Place your knees together and raise one leg until it is straight at the knee. Hold this position for a second before lowering your knee back down to the floor again. Repeat with the other leg, doing a few extensions on each side.

3.   Seated March

This exercise simulates marching while in a seated position. With one foot firmly planted on the ground, bend your leg at the knee and lift it a few inches off the floor. Replace the foot and repeat with the other leg. Maintain a marching rhythm that is comfortable for you.

4.   Arm Extensions

For this exercise, you will extend your arms outwards using a punching motion. Make your hands into fists and hold them in front of your chest with both elbows bent at your sides. Leaving one arm where it is, extend the other arm straight outwards as if you were punching an invisible punching bag in front of you. Bend your elbow to bring the arm back to your chest and repeat on the other side. Complete several repetitions.

5.   Overhead Press

Begin by bending your arms so that your fists are by your shoulders. Next, raise one arm up diagonally above your head until your arm is straight, then bring it back down to your starting position. Repeat on both arms several times.
