Visiting Your Senior Relative At Christmas

Visiting your relatives at Christmas. Some love it, some hate it. But whatever your relationship is with your more senior relative, it’s important to take the time to think about how you can help them out this Christmas time.

Here are some tips for visiting your senior relative at Christmas.

Visit Them If Possible

A lot of the time, spending Christmas in their own home is probably preferred for a senior relative. So, unless necessary, try to visit them where they are instead of the other way around. A change of routine is always more of a hindrance for the elderly than younger people, so they will much prefer welcoming you into their home than the other way around.

Also, ensure they actually want a visit and you don’t just turn up unannounced. They might be looking forward to a quiet evening and not their relatives knocking at their door!

Don’t Force Your Plans Onto Them

While your idea of Christmas might be plenty of drink and food, this is not what everyone likes. When visiting your relatives, ensure that you take into account what they normally like to do at Christmas and plan accordingly. Try not to force what your idea of a good time is, as this might clash with what they want to do.

See if they have any plans already and offer to join them if they want company. They might be going out to a local community centre or church, so see if you can accompany them!

Take The Strain Away

While 20 years ago your relatives might have cooked the Christmas dinner, organised entertainment and bought everyone presents, they are not as young as they used to be. Try to take the strain away from them by offering to assist with more strenuous tasks. Instead of them cooking the Christmas dinner themselves, offer to help out. Or if they’re not looking forward to a big shopping trip to buy presents, offer to go with them or manage the shopping for them.
