Is My Home Suitable For a Stairlift Installation?

Choosing a stairlift installation to make your home more accessible is an important decision to retain your independence if you experience a loss of mobility. Whether you have become less mobile due to age or a disability, a stairlift installation can improve your quality of life and help you get around your home with greater ease. However, many people are still unsure about whether their home is suitable for a stairlift. In this blog, we cover whether your home can accommodate a stairlift installation and what you need to keep your eye out for.

How To Know Whether Your Home Is Suitable for a Stairlift Installation

Staircase Width and Size

The first, and most important, consideration when choosing a stairlift is whether your stairs are wide enough. Generally, a stairlift must be at least 29 inches wide for it to be operated by a user safely and comfortably. It’s always worth having a professional survey your staircase, but generally, staircases less wide than this are not suitable. As well as the width, the height between the top of the stairs and the ceiling must also be considered.

Straight or Curved?

As well as making sure that your staircase is the right size for a stairlift, you must also know whether you require a straight or curved stairlift. If your staircase bends around or has a landing halfway, you will likely require a curved staircase. If your staircase is perfectly straight then you will only need a straight lift.

Other Amendments You May Have To Make

If your bannisters have gaps in between them which are large enough for a foot to get stuck in, you may need to have these filled in or covered by a perspex barrier. If there is any danger of the user getting injured, amendments may be required for the staircase or bannister.
